The Package

The Package was a weekly gig guide from Wellington, New Zealand, published between 1999 and 2007. It folded out to reveal a large format gig guide of listings for numerous bars and nightclubs.

It also showcased the best in upcoming and ongoing cultural events and became essential reading for anyone planning a night out in the city. I contributed a few illustrated covers, spot illustrations and was briefly their cinema sub-editor, liaising with film festivals and guiding a team of reviewers. Paid in movie tickets...

Character Design Week 5

Week 5 of Stephen Silver's character design course. This week was about taking my Dr Jekkyl character from rough to cleaned up illustration. Steven has impressive control over his brush tipped ink pens. My submission was done digitally in Manga Studio as the postage on one single pen was over 20 pounds!

Here is some print work I did for a publication called Mix, a cheeky little booze guide for the inner city sophisticate, outlining cocktails, bars and scuttlebutt. I had much fun designing the covers and helping to art direct the overall tone.

Character Design Week 3

Week 3 of Stephen Silver's 9 week character design class… Firstly a realistic study of a portrait photo, then trying to push that character into a bunch of different base shapes. Then more refinement sketches on my 1950s Jekkyl and Hyde. This week's tutorials were focused on facial construction, mostly building upon the Andrew Loomis style of construction guides. Free Loomis PDFs here, well worth the trees to print out…

Character Design Week 2

Here is my second assignment for the character design course: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in any era / setting. I based them in the 1950s, going for a nice juxtaposition between straight laced scientist and wild biker greaser outlaw. B movie scientist takes secret formula and turns into gigantic B movie greaser. Ed Wood meets the Wild Bunch.
